With the sailing time in mind you should plan your time on dry land carefully ensuring that you do not go too far away and always giving yourself enough time to get back onboard. Always be mindful of the time and if possible always set an alarm on a watch or mobile phone leaving yourself more than enough time to get back to the ship. It is better to get back to the ship in plenty of time and not having seen everything a shore rather than seeing everything a shore and standing at the dockside watching your family sail off into the sunset without you. When a shore you should always exercise the same caution that you would when visiting any foreign city or town, do not stray from the main streets and never be tempted by promises of greatness by locals, as always, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Finally whenever you go a shore you must always carry your passport or any other form of identification that you carry with you incase you get into any trouble whilst on dry land but also so you can prove your identity when getting back onboard your luxury cruise ship. Whether you are a student on your way to HVAC certification, an HVAC professional, or just enjoy learning about the evolution of technology, there is history for you to learn about refrigeration. From the sizes to the colors to the chemicals used within them, cooling units have changed significantly over time.

Before refrigerators, people salted their meats to preserve them by using a water solution called brine. Some people did have icehouses that helped to keep food from spoiling, but that wasn't quite as common. In 1911, Americans began purchasing refrigerators for their kitchens. Of course, this was not a standard across the country. Only the wealthiest Americans could afford such expensive appliances.

As time went on, new technologies made refrigerators more affordable for middle class Americans. The major refrigerator-purchasing boom happened in the 1950s and 1960s because of a sudden increase in marketing. The convenience and affordability of refrigerators was broadcast across the country on the other new fun toy: the television. These new refrigeration technologies featured a combination refrigerator and freezer unit, which allowed people to keep food at varying temperatures. Temperature regulation was something that the country had never seen before and certainly had not been possible with icehouses. General Electric became one of the most popular companies with a supply of refrigeration units after they created the first refrigerator and freezer unit; the Kelvinator and Frigidaire became widely sold models.

In the 1970s, environmental concerns were hot topics. Every day Americans began taking an interest in the environment and not just trusting their politicians to incite change. This mentality continued through the 1980s and the chlorofluorocarbon used in the cooling process, Freon, became seen as a contributor to the hole in the ozone layer. Now there are very strict laws about the use of Freon in refrigeration and HVAC.

Most Americans today don't know anyone who salts their food rather than use a refrigerator. It is not only a timesaving and convenient appliance to have, but also helps to prevent food-borne illness. All sorts of food from meat to ice cream can be kept in the house for significant periods of time and still be safe to eat.

Refrigeration isn't just used in homes, though that is where we probably see it the most often. There are warehouses devoted entirely to food preservation, where the food is housed before it is shipped to a grocery store or a restaurant. It will be far more economical for you to book and pay for your extra nights in your home country than to try and change your travel plans when you get there.

3. Establish what month you want to travel. Most if not all European cruises run from April to October. There is no specific month that can guarantee 100% perfect weather, but if you don't like the heat then avoid the Mediterranean in the summertime as temperatures can reach as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. Determine if you're selecting a cruise for the ship or the itinerary. If you are a veteran cruiser then the ship could be the most important element, as you cherish the service and the amenities of the ship. If you are first time or limited cruiser then the itinerary will be most important. Select ports of calls that are of the most interest to you. Once you narrow down your top two itineraries then you can look at the ships that match them.

5. Research the cruise line and ships that you have selected. Determine if they cater to the type of cruising you would like to do. Are all of the amenities you want available on the ship you're looking at? Since you are sailing the Mediterranean is it important to have a putting green or an ice skating rink on your ship? Also look at the size of the ships, they vary and although large ships offer more to do on board they can be intimidating and tiresome. Generally the smaller ships sail the Mediterranean more often than the larger ones, because the larger ships are still being used in the Caribbean during the same time period.

6. Research shore excursions. All cruise lines offer shore excursions at each port. When you travel so far it's important that you research each location and review the highlights. You want to make the best of your trip to Europe. Spend the money on the excursions because with the limited time you have in each port, and the difficulty to get around, it would be too time consuming for you to try to tour on your own.

7. Ensure that you are aware of what you are booking. If you select "cruise only" that means you have to find your own air transportation and transfers to your port of embarkation. Most prices shown in the brochure and on the internet are listed as cruise only prices. In all cases adding airfare to Europe can change the cost of your trip significantly. Therefore think carefully when you decide which port of embarkation you want to use. Does it cost more or less to fly into Spain, England, or Italy. Keep in mind that if there is a flight delay on the airline you have selected and you miss your cruise, you or your travel agent are responsible to get you to the next port of call or you will have to forfeit your trip.

8. If you select the "air sea program" with the cruise line it means that they will provide transportation and transfers for you. The bonus to this is if the flights they select are delayed they will find a way to connect you with the cruise. The disadvantage could be that they will not always select non-stop flights. You may have to travel via one or two other countries before you arrive at your final destination.

9. When selecting cruise ports keep in mind that on most European cruises the time spent in the ports of call are can be short. Therefore you need to carefully choose your options prior to leaving the ship to tour. Visiting historic sites and architecture are the highlights of a European cruise. There is also a lot of walking involved, be prepared for this. Pack good walking or running shoes in your luggage so you are ready to tour well in advance.

10. Passports are required for all European cruises for Canadian and U.S citizens. There are however some locations such as Russia where visa's will also be required. Clarify this information with the cruise line or with your travel agent way in advance.

11. Currency what do you bring on your cruise? It is suggested that you change your money into Euro's when you take a European cruise. All on board purchases and room charges will be paid for or charged to your account in Euro's.

From the old eight-track cassette or reel-to-reel we now have amazing inventions such as the i-pod mp3 music players; dvd players, not to mention talk interactive computers and electronically controlled houses that sense and manage your every need.

How do you book and plan your holiday; how do you book a flight or an hotel, perhaps a guest lodge. Yes, there are still travellers who go the traditional route of the suburban travel advisor or agent, I do think there remains a need, if you need destination information, cannot type and do not have access to a computer, this is for you. For the rest of us, type in "holiday house rent Port Alfred" and you will be amazed how easy it really is, faced with more opportunities and information than anyone would ever need. You will be invited to visit sites with information; with holiday homes to rent; B&B and guesthouse accommodation catering for every need or desire.

3. Once your search results are visible, read the small print, ensure that the site you click on is really an accommodation site, usually clearly visible in the site name or visible phrase in the summary. Don't hesitate to go to any site clearly matching your need in the top ten pages.

4. Once selecting the site, if the first page is clear' professional and a dedicated accommodation portal, then stay there and search further, if not, click on your "back" key and select another one.

5. On a chosen site, search for the accommodation you require and without hesitation, when finding what you want send them an enquiry giving required dates; number of persons and contact detail.

6. Once you have done this on one site, go to two others and do the same thing, sending a total of three enquiries. The principal being that you will select the company and/or accommodation that offers you the quickest; most efficient and professional service provided they have met your needs.

7. Once you have made the booking, ensure you print the confirmation e-mail and/or whatever documents are available, file this with your other travel papers, relax and look forward to a well planned holiday.

Whenever I travel I always either send a confirmation e-mail and/or phone the establishment a day or two before my arrival....perhaps I am over cautious but this is better than a botched booking. What an absolute blessing to be able to spend quality time in a holiday destination with those you love.

Preparing for an Overseas Flight? Air Travel Tips Part Six

Hopping on a plane to go anywhere seems to grow more complex every day. New security procedures and safety considerations trigger a never-ending parade of rules and regulations. This article, the final in a series of six, can help you through the maze. Be sure to collect the entire series.

Do you have trouble sleeping on an aircraft? Are you a nervous passenger? Pack some chamomile teabags in your carryon! Once the plane is in the air, ask a flight attendant for some hot water and steep a soothing cup of chamomile tea. It may help to lull you into a relaxed sleep.

If you have connecting flights, make sure that your luggage is tagged to your final destination. This will save you the hassle of collecting luggage, getting through security, and catching your connecting flight.

Rather than pay the steep fee for headphones, be sure to pack your own.

Avoid that lethargic feeling - take a brisk walk or work out in the gym before heading to the airport. You will arrive feeling refreshed and ready to face the jostling crowds at your destination.

Familiarize yourself with all the airport terminals you will be passing through during your trip. You can use the Internet to locate maps of airports. Study them a bit, and carry printouts with you while you travel. If you anticipate a time crunch between connecting flights, study the map carefully before you land so that you will know exactly where you need to go to catch the next plane.

The most dangerous parts of any flight are take-off and landing. Try to book non-stop flights when possible. You save time and increase safety. Remember, though, compared to all other forms of travel, air is statistically the safest way to go.

If you wear contact lenses, dry air in the cabin can irritate sensitive eyes. You may want to switch to glasses while you fly. If you do opt to stick with your contacts, ensure that they are scrupulously clean and that you keep them lubricated.

Do not carry your tickets with you while you are out sightseeing and dining. They are important documents that should be treated with the same care you give your passport. If you do lose a ticket, report it immediately. It may take some time to replace, requiring you to pay for a second ticket up front (while you wait up to several months for a refund).

To help very young children with pressure changes during descent, encourage them to chew gum or suck on a soother (or thumb).

When to Plan a Cruise

During most of the season, you can count on the afternoon
northwest wind in the South Bay and wind coming more
from the west in the North Bay. The other significant variable
is the tidal current. The ideal plan is to have the current
going with you in all directions but that's not always
possible. If you can just plan to have the current in your favor
at the critical times, you'll have a great advantage. There are
places in the Bay where the current is stronger than
elsewhere. These places can be seen in the current charts
of San Francisco Bay. There are also days every month
when the current is stronger than on other days. When the
tides are the most extreme, it's called "spring tides". The
least extreme tides are called "neap tides". The tidal current
is of course strongest during the spring tides. Tide and
current tables are available on the web and in booklet form
at Spinnaker and many other marine facilities.

If possible, plan a cruise so the current is favorable or at
least not too unfavorable when you're going to be passing
through areas where the current is strongest. The tides and
currents tend to be in opposite phase every week. If it turns
out the current is going to be unfavorable for your passage
one week; you can expect it to be favorable the following
week. That's assuming you plan for approximately the same
departure time. Modern cruising often involves a lot of
motoring. Accept the necessity of motoring, especially if your
going to start early in the morning before the wind comes
up.

Fueling

The inboard Diesel powered boats carry enough fuel for just
about any cruise of a few days duration. More fuel is
available at the many fuel docks located north of Redwood
City. The outboard powered boats normally only carry
enough fuel for 3 or 4 hours of motoring. Spinnaker can
provide an extra container of fuel upon request, and if
necessary, cruisers can purchase more gasoline along the
way. If "50:1 outboard mix" is not available, outboard users
will have to mix the new gas with outboard motor oil to make
the proper mixture required by outboard engines. Charterers
are given a full tank of gas upon departure from the charter
base. Any additional fuel required is at the expenxe of the
charter.

Galapagos Islands - In the Footsteps of Darwin

Struggling up the long dusty street next morning, a windowless, wooden coach is spied in the distance. Clambering aboard and settling sweatily on the generously varnished wooden seats, it is already 27 degrees Celsius - thoughts of a long hot day shimmer before them! Counting numbers on a thirty seater should not take too long, but it is close to an hour before the engine is coaxed coughing, into life and they creak off, breathing in lungs full of diesel smoke back drafted through the glassless windows.

The pale blue motor launch bobbing quietly at the dock looks workmanlike and ready to put to sea. It has a rather ornate stern railing, varnished bright of course, which looks out of place on a work boat. She motors out in the glorious morning sunshine and a sparkling sea. By this time there is a gentle sea breeze, deliciously cooling our crew so that the spectacular views can be all the more appreciated. Rounding the promontory she heads for the landing place. No dock or sea wall is visible and it appears that disembarkation is on to nothing more than a large flat rock. There is a surge running, so this operation looks like it may require some modicum of seamanship skills to successfully get the thirty or so tourists ashore. The boat is backed up to the rock, a crew member jumps with a rope, which he lashes to a large and rusty iron bar embedded in the rocks. What he doesn't see is that the shipboard crew member has the other end of the line bent on to a cleat with the running end passing through the intricately carved and varnished balusters. With the next surge, the woven rope tightens. With the stern swinging, water squirting from the taut and twanging line, the rat a tat tat of splintering woodwork is clearly heard above the surf as ten or more balusters snap like matchsticks - the rope knifing through them, splinters exploding in a thousand directions. Fortunately, no unsuspecting tourists legs are in the path of the line as they would snap just as easily. Our crew smother sniggers, coming out as coughs and snorts, but as fellow sailors they sympathise with the unfortunate fellow on board who is yet to receive the wrath of his skipper.

Turning their backs on the ensuing dressing down our crew, bounding ashore, actually step right over a large sea lion nestling at the foot of the rock. This sets the scene for the next few hours of a lifetime experience with the native and wild fauna of these islands. Following a narrow winding path through knee high scrub, they eventually come to the top of the rise, and spread out before them is a most fantastic sight. A multitude of wild life is staring right back at them. 'Wild' seems a little extreme, as all creatures just carry on with what they are doing and barely take notice of their visitors, aside from a cursory inspection as they first come into view. Gulls are nesting next to Boobys, both the blue and red footed variety, frigate birds in the bushes, a wide range of seabirds floating overhead along with the female frigate birds, iguanas and various lizards scuttling back and forth, altogether like one very, very large family.

Over the top and down toward the sea on the other side, this blend continues and as the waters' edge nears, seals, sea lions and the marine iguanas are added into the mix - a natural sight almost beyond words to describe.

It is the mating season and some Boobys put on a wonderfully comic display of their mating dance. Slowly circling one another, flapping their rather large red or blue feet at one another as they go, moving ever closer, until they come together, rapturously rubbing their puffed chests. This is obviously highly erotic for them as they finish in a very cosy cuddle, necks entwined.

The frigate bird takes a different approach. The male builds the most untidy nest of sticks in an equally scruffy looking bush and then sits in it. Raising his long beaked head skyward, inflating his big red throat balloon(only the males have this), he stares eagerly into the blue hoping to attract one of the high circling females. Our crew, watching the process for quite some time without result, have their doubts as to the effectiveness of this pursuit and the two thirds male crew certainly find it difficult to understand why any male would go to such lengths. Who's ever heard of building a house first and then standing on the front porch waving an appendage at every passing female! Sibling crew treats these coarse remarks with a disdainful toss of her head, muttering something about the male gene pool being closely related to pigs!

In a light offshore breeze, the crystal waves of this gently sloping sandy beach stand up very nicely. With the early afternoon sun just behind them now, the breakers are window clear and suddenly, there are eight or nine dolphins surfing along these rollers, gambolling out and into the face of the wave with absolute precision. The slightest movement of their flippers or tail, produces a marked change in direction or action, so they can hold their position perfectly in the barrel for as long as they wish, run out of water, or become bored with the game. This amusement appears to be for the spectators benefit with several of them almost running up onto the rock strewn beach, grinning, before bearing away in a long carving turn for another run - what a delight. A couple of seals join in the fun and whilst impressive, do not have quite the same maneuverability and finesse as their speedier cousins.

The human mind can only observe, absorb and appreciate so much at any one time, so, after a short swim and with our crew going into mental overload, the tour party heads back to the boat, coach, and dusty, but happy journey home. Tomorrow is another day when a visit to the famous and fabulous Galapagos tortoises is planned.

Travel Review of Allan Gardens

Allan Gardens can easily be called the Secret Gardens of Toronto. It is located in the heart of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is nestled between Sherbourne Street to the east, Carlton Street to the north, Jarvis Street to the west and Gerrard Street East to the south. Admission is free. Allan Gardens is comprised of 6 greenhouses covering 16,000 square feet located on over 5 acres of park grounds.

Allan Gardens was founded in 1834 by Sir John Colborne, who was the lieutenant-governor of Upper Canada from 1828 to 1836. Its first president was the Honorable George Markland, who at the time was the inspector-general of Upper Canada. Allan Gardens became the first horticultural society to be organized in Ontario. The purpose of the gardens was to encourage the introduction and cultivation of a variety of fruits, vegetables and plants in Canada. The Honorable George W. Allan then donated five acres of land to the horticultural society. On September 11, 1860, the gardens were officially opened by the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) during one of his visits to Canada. In 1901 the gardens were renamed "Allan Gardens".

A striking feature of the greenhouses is the domed "Palm House" built in 1909-1910 by Toronto's city architect Robert McCallum. It was built to replace the pavilion that had burned down in 1902. The Palm house has been designated an historical building by the Toronto Historical Board under the Ontario Heritage Act.

A permanent collection of plants is housed in the greenhouses and seasonal plants are rotated throughout the year. Each greenhouse has a unique theme. One of the greenhouses has a special orchid collection. It is also the only greenhouse at Allan Gardens to feature a small bridge and waterwheel. Another greenhouse recreates desert like conditions and features numerous species of cacti, including the organ pipe cactus, the beavertail cactus and the barrel cactus.

The teaching greenhouse is a newer addition, designed to encourage and teach children how to garden. Three of the greenhouses feature small ponds with gold fish swimming lazily in the ponds. One of the ponds also features a decorative statue from England, which depicts the story of Leda and the swan from Greek mythology.

You can often find artists in the greenhouses and in the park as they sit on a bench and sketch the local scenery. The park has several pathways, benches and numerous large trees. Most of the trees are over one hundred years old and include beech, oak, maple and cherry trees. As well, during the summer, the rose garden is in bloom all year long. A statue of the Scottish poet Robert Burns can be found in the east part of the park. In the west part of the park is a fountain. Recent renovations have added a leash free dog park, which is fenced in to keep the dogs in and away from danger.

As an interesting side note, several episodes of the tv series "Kenny vs. Spenny" have featured the park in the show and local tv stations have featured the greenhouse on the news. As well, permission can be granted for wedding photos to be taken in the greenhouses.

History of Singapore - in a Nutshell

Situated at the southernmost tip of the Malay Peninsula with a land area of 685.4 km2, Singapore is an island-state with a 4.2 million population. It consists of one main island and 63 islets, some of the more well-known ones being: Pulau Tekong, Pulau Ubin, St John's Island, Kusu Island, Pulau Hantu, Jurong Island. Pulau means "island" in Malay.

Modern Singapore was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819 when it was little more than a swamp. Only until the "rightful" Johorean heir agreed to sell the island to the British that it became a colony. Widely known and recorded by many sojourners as Temasek - Sea Town - by the 14th century, Singapore was a thriving vassal state of the Sri Vijayan empire.

Legend has it that a Palembang prince called Sang Nila Utama was responsible for the present-day name, Singapura meaning Lion City. In Sanskrit and Malay, Singa = Lion + Pura = City. It was while seeking refuge from a storm with his entourage that Sang Nila Utama spotted a mousedeer - which he was told a lion. But lions' natural habitat is the grassy plains or the savannah, not jungles.

As the British had ruled Singapore for about a hundred and forty years till 1963, one of the legacies is the English Legal System. As well as English which is the language of administration, business and instruction in schools from kindergarten upwards. In addition to Malay, Mandarin and Tamil that make up the official languages of the country.

Furthermore, Malay is the national language as enshrined in the Constitution. This is partly in recognition of the indigenous status of the Malays. Summer Work In The Greek Islands

Each year in Greece, along with the holidaymakers, come an influx of workers who spend anywhere from 2 to 7 months working on the Greek islands in tourist related services. There are numerous seasonal jobs in hotels, cafes, bars, tavernas, shops, travel agencies and car rental offices, to name just a few. For most of these jobs in the tourist areas Greek is not required.

So how do you go about finding summer work? The majority of jobs are advertised locally and by word of mouth. Workers who come to the islands for the summer season usually arrive between April and June to search on the spot for work.

Many North Europeans book a two week holiday at the beginning of the season and start searching the bar, caf & taverna windows for 'staff wanted' notices. Chat to local bar and taverna owners, make connections, and they will very likely point you in the direction of places looking for staff. In the busy resorts this is the norm and hundreds of young people turn up looking for jobs each year. For bartending you will normally need some experience while 'PR' jobs are plentiful (basically handing out flyers for a bar or club, and hanging around that bar encouraging passers-by to go in). Other options are waitressing, cooking or washing up in a bar, caf or taverna.

It's not just the busy resorts who take on staff, many taverns, pensions, shops and beach bars in quieter locations across the islands also seek English speaking workers, and in remote spots you are very likely to have accommodation thrown in. Just choose your location, head there and ask around.

The advantage of searching for a job locally, rather than over the internet, is that you will see exactly where you will be working, and for whom. But if you prefer to have a job waiting for you when you get there then you'll find a number of vacancies advertised on the internet on various job websites and in general Greek forums. An internet search will bring up plenty of relevant websites.

Other job possibilities exist with tour operators, the larger of which employ reps, office administration staff and transfer reps, both from their home bases and locally. Generally vacancies are advertised February/ March, but late - starters may still be looking for staff in May and June.
